From 15–16 October, Aboriginal Family Legal Services Queensland (AFLSQ) First Nations staff proudly attended Wunya 2025, a national First Nations Networking Event held in Brisbane. Designed to enhance professional development, the event centred around Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices, collaboration, and shared experiences within the community legal sector.
Wunya began with a moving welcome and smoking ceremony under the shade of native trees, followed by an introduction from event organiser Sammy Cooper. Over two days, attendees engaged in a rich program of speakers with lived experience, cultural activities, and opportunities for connection and reflection.
Held on the outskirts of Brisbane in a tranquil urban setting, the venue offered shaded garden areas for attendees to unwind and recharge. Thoughtful touches like puzzles on tables provided gentle distractions for those processing emotionally impactful content — a testament to the event’s focus on cultural self-care and wellbeing.
A standout moment for many was the Bushtukka Mocktails crafted by First Nations chef Chris Jordan, whose Kamilaroi heritage inspired his use of native ingredients and ancient techniques. His creations were more than delicious — they were a celebration of culture and Country.
AFLSQ staff expressed deep appreciation for the opportunity to attend, with many noting the lasting impact of the stories, connections, and knowledge shared. Events like Wunya continue to strengthen the sector and empower First Nations professionals to lead with cultural integrity and care.
